PMI is a positive selection system that offers scientists a novel and efficient alternative to using antibiotic resistance and herbicide tolerance markers in genetically modified (GM) crops. The system is being made available by Syngenta under license. This sheet aims to answer some of your likely questions.
Q: Who is the PMI technology being made available to? A: Both companies and not-for-profit research institutions are invited to contact Syngenta regarding access to the PMI system. The technology will be made available for research-only purposes on completion of an agreement. Commercial licenses (and options to commercial licenses) are also available.
Q: Will PMI constructs be made available? A: Syngenta will provide PMI constructs to requestors once the agreement is fully executed. The PMI system is available in a number of constructs and bacterial strains to suit individual requirements and to fit all currently used transformation systems. All the applicant needs to do is inform Syngenta on their intended use of PMI and to identify the relevant transformation system they will be using.
Q: Will help be made available with regard to using the PMI system? A: PMI is a positive selection system that is compatible with traditional transformation procedures and therefore should be relatively easy to use by those with experience in transformation. However, Syngenta will, upon request of the recipient, provide appropriate protocols for the research, under the confidentiality provisions of the agreement.
Q: Are there any opportunities for collaboration on PMI? A: If there are promising results or ideas in a particular field, Syngenta would, of course, be willing to consider potential further collaborations. Please feel free to contact us if you have interest in a collaboration.
Q: How do I contact Syngenta about PMI? A: For inquiries about licensing or access, contact Martha Dunn.
